POLICY & PRACTICE DEMONSTRATION PROJECT (PPDP)
Five states, California, Maine,
Minnesota, Oregon
and South Carolina, participate in the
Learning In Deed PPDP. While each state is unique, they will all
strive to:
- integrate quality service-learning practice more fully into
K-12 academic curriculum
- reduce barriers to integrating service-learning into the classroom
- implement policies that support and encourage service-learning
at the state/territory, district and school levels
To meet Learning In Deed’s long-term goal of institutionalization
of service-learning, these demonstration states are:
- supporting high-quality practice
- developing supportive policies
- creating supportive infrastructures and processes
Education Commission
of the States (ECS) manages the PPDP and provides technical
assistance to the five states by:
- identifying the conditions necessary to meet LID goals
- providing technical assistance
- offering state, regional and national workshops on policy and practice
- helping states “scale up” service-learning in schools
- developing appropriate models for states, districts and schools
that effectively incorporate service-learning with the curriculum
ECS also is encouraging other states to learn from the work of
the five demonstration states by increasing the scope of service-learning
policy and practice in their schools. These states will be invited
to participate in the Initiative as “Network States.”
